sunday in catahoula, 1952

Miss Dot (Doris Bourque Boutte) the young woman on the left licking the paddle of the ice cream maker, remembers the moment this photograph was taken in July of that year.

They'd crossed the lake by boat, as they had on many occasions, to have a picnic on the other shore, an island actually, at the time largely uninhabited, and they'd just finished a batch of ice cream.

It was hot, Miss Dot recalls, and the ice cream was so good and so cold.
