gammy's bread & butter pickles

20-30 cucumbers
1 large white onion
1/2 cup salt
5 cups sugar
5 cups cider vinegar
2 tablespoons mustard seed
1 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon cloves

Slice thinly cucumbers and one large white onion. Soak 3 hours with salt. Drain. Rinse. Cook sugar, vinegar and spices. Heat, do not boil. Put slices in vinegar and pack in jars and seal.
